Artists Statement - Mark Hilsden

As an artist, life is about curiosity, asking questions, and disrupting the status quo. I am fascinated by people who passionately pursue their quests, becoming outsiders living on the edge of society.

For over thirty years, I have created architectural portraits to share these compelling stories. My process involves extensive research and observation to capture the essence of people and places. Several of my solo exhibitions have focused on the stories of individuals and inspirational images of historic towns.

This has led to the creation of visual biographies for various private and business clients in recent years. His home town of Appleby recently commissioned a series of illustrated and axonometric maps and illustrations of historic buildings for visitor information boards and murals.

My curiosity also prompted me to move into the Colour Makers House in the heart of Appleby. This 400-year-old building resonates deeply with my artistic journey. On the ground floor, there is a traditional art shop filled with shelves of jars containing vibrant colours. This display continually inspires artists and visitors alike. In the workshop, we demonstrate and extract ochres from foraged molehills and rocks, using alchemy to recreate the beauty of historic colours. Up the grand stately stairs, my atmospheric studio features mullioned windows, low beams and a Jacobean fireplace, where I bring commissions to life.
